The Spyder IDE has a really nice feature called variable explorer, where you can inspect all your variables and their content. This is something I was always missing in Jupyter notebooks, but turns out there is an easy way to get something quite close to it.
Thankfully someone wrote an extension for Jupyter that is available in the jupytercontribnbextensions package. Follow the instructions to get this awesome extension:
- Shutdown your jupyter notebook server
- Type one of the following two in your terminal:
a) If you use conda:
conda install -c conda-forge jupyter_contrib_nbextensions
b) or if you use pip:
pip install jupyter_contrib_nbextensions
jupyter contrib nbextension install --user
- Activate the extension from your terminal:
jupyter nbextension enable varInspector/main
- Start your server again
- You should now see a new cross hair icon in your notebook's toolbar:
By the way, with the extension package you installed many more useful tools. Just check out the list in their documentary.
